A green shamrock and a small airliner sit inside a black roundel lettered "Irish Air Lines," with the names Aer Lingus and Aerlinte Eireann around the rim. Aer Lingus was founded in April 1936 and made its first flight that May, from Baldonnel to Bristol. Aerlinte Eireann was the sister company created to fly the Atlantic; its Shannon-New York service began in April 1958, and it was renamed Aer Lingus in 1960. Travelers once stuck labels like this on their suitcases, and it remains a proud emblem of Ireland in the air.
