French illustrator Robert Falcucci (1900–1989) painted this colorful "Europe" poster for Air France in the late 1940s; dealers usually date it to 1949. A lively montage of European scenes fills the sheet, inviting travelers to see the whole continent by air as postwar services returned. Born in Châteauroux to a Corsican father and a mother from the Berry region, Falcucci became one of the steady hands behind Air France's poster program, which for decades used commissioned artwork to draw travelers to destinations around the world.
