In 1968 Air France commissioned Georges Mathieu, the French painter regarded as one of the fathers of Lyrical Abstraction, to create a set of 14 posters, each devoted to one of the airline's destinations. For France he worked on a white ground with sweeping, calligraphic strokes, fast gestural lines that suggest rather than depict. Unlike the airline's earlier pictorial posters, the series treated each country as a burst of color and movement. Other subjects in the set included Great Britain, Germany, Greece, India, Egypt, Japan and the USA.
