Bernard Villemot (1911–1989) packed a whole country into the outline of the Eiffel Tower for this early-1950s Air France poster. Within the tower's silhouette, on a light blue ground, sit French landmarks such as the Arc de Triomphe and Notre-Dame alongside scenes of the countryside, inviting travelers to see France beyond Paris. Villemot trained under the poster master Paul Colin and became one of the leading French poster artists of the 1960s and 1970s, with clients such as Orangina, Perrier and Bally. He held that a poster should be treated as though it were a painting.
