Jean Carlu (1900–1997), one of France's leading poster designers, created this playful image of Ganesha for Air France's India service in the late 1950s; the Paris gallery Galerie 123 dates it to 1959. The elephant-headed Hindu god of wisdom and learning is drawn in violet, orange, blue and green, seated within a white halo on a bright yellow ground, in what the gallery calls an almost childlike vision of the deity. Carlu had worked in aviation advertising since the 1920s, and here he packs all the color of India into one bold, joyful figure.
