A small round emblem in deep red and gold marks a big anniversary: 50 years of civil air transport in India, 1932-82, issued jointly in the names of Indian Airlines and Air-India. The date looks back to 15 October 1932, when J.R.D. Tata flew a single-engined de Havilland Puss Moth carrying airmail from Karachi to Bombay via Ahmedabad. His Tata Air Services became Tata Airlines in 1938 and Air India in 1946, and was nationalised in 1953.
