A San Francisco cable car climbs in the foreground, the Golden Gate Bridge spans the background and sailboats crowd the bay in this warm orange poster for American Airlines, dated 1950. In the postwar years American flew transcontinental routes from New York to California and commissioned a run of destination posters to fill those seats, including E. McKnight Kauffer's 1948 "American Airlines to California." This design packs the state's best-known San Francisco symbols into one sunny scene. The artist is not recorded.
