An old sea captain sits at his easel, painting the coast he once sailed, in this gray-toned 1948 poster by Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890–1954) for American Airlines. Kauffer signed it "E. McKnight Kauffer '48," and copies are held today by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where it is catalogued as "American Airlines to the East Coast." It belongs to the celebrated series of destination posters Kauffer produced for American in the late 1940s, combining his modernist eye with a gentle, story-telling charm.
