Castle turrets with flags flying rise in bold silhouette against a solid red ground in this poster by Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890–1954), made for American Airlines in the late 1940s; the Victoria and Albert Museum dates its copy to around 1950. Kauffer had spent two decades in London before returning to America, so England was familiar ground. At the time, American flew the Atlantic through its overseas arm, American Overseas Airlines, which opened New York to London service in October 1945 with DC-4s via Boston, Gander and Shannon, before merging into Pan Am in 1950.
