A low sun burns behind the Golden Gate Bridge in this early-1970s American Airlines poster, with sailboats gliding beneath the span. Dealer listings credit the painting to Dong Kingman (1911–2000), the Oakland-born watercolorist who was a leading figure of the California Style school and whose work hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Kingman also painted background art for Hollywood films in the 1950s and 1960s. The bridge, opened in 1937, remains San Francisco's great symbol of arrival by sea or by air.
