A navy-bordered oval carries the American Airlines name around the top and El Mayan across the bottom, with the classic eagle between two red A's set beside a striking red profile of a Maya figure in a feathered headdress. The Mexican imagery fits American's long link to Mexico: the airline began flying there in 1942, with a Douglas DC-3 service from Dallas to Mexico City via Monterrey, its second international destination after Toronto. The eagle emblem dates from a company design contest of the early 1930s.
