A navy roundel lettered American Airlines and Mail - Passengers - Express frames a white eagle diving over a globe between two red A's, with a lightning-like flash behind it. The three words sum up how early airlines earned their living. American traces its roots to Robertson Aircraft Corporation, which began flying the mail on April 15, 1926, and like many early carriers American relied on U.S. Mail contracts as it grew. The eagle emblem itself came from a company design contest in the early 1930s.
