A wide red ring lettered American Airlines and set with two small stars circles a cream center, where a navy eagle with outspread wings rises between two red A's. The eagle-and-initials emblem came from a company design contest in the early 1930s, won by divisional traffic manager Goodrich Murphy, and it identified American for about three decades. Formed as American Airways in 1930 and renamed in 1934, American went on to fly the first DC-3s in 1936, calling its aircraft Flagships. Airlines gave out labels like this for passengers to put on their luggage.
