British European Airways invited travelers to Malta with this 1960 poster. A boat with red sails glides across the water, with the honey-colored fortifications and buildings of Valletta's harbour rising behind it. The “GC” after Malta's name refers to the George Cross, awarded to the island by King George VI in 1942 in recognition of its people's courage under siege during the Second World War. The artist is not recorded on our copy. At the time Malta was still a British colony, and BEA's flights linked it directly with London.
