A silver roundel lettered 'Braniff Airways' frames a pink-and-black panel of little scenes: a city skyline, an airliner in flight and a palm-fringed shore at sunset, tied together by the slogan 'Great Lakes to the Gulf' in red. The motto came to Braniff when it bought Bowen Airlines in January 1936, whose own slogan had been 'From the Great Lakes to the Gulf', and it summed up a route map running from the Midwest down toward the Gulf of Mexico. Airlines handed out labels like this for passengers to stick on their suitcases.
