A stylised red bird with long swept-back wings soars over a ring of red stars, above a bold red band carrying the Capital Airlines script in white. Airlines gave out labels like this so travellers could mark their bags. Capital grew out of Pennsylvania Central Airlines, formed in 1936, and adopted the Capital name with new insignia and colours on 21 April 1948. Based at Washington National Airport, it merged into United Airlines on 1 June 1961.
