Bold red 'CPA' letters fill the centre of this mint-green label, above a ribbon reading 'Serves the Far East', the airline's name in Chinese characters and a script 'Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd.', all framed by line drawings of temples, pagodas and colonial buildings. Cathay Pacific was born on September 24, 1946, founded by American Roy Farrell and Australian Sydney de Kantzow, two former air force pilots who began with a single surplus Douglas DC-3 nicknamed Betsy. They chose 'Cathay', the ancient name for China, and 'Pacific' for their hopes of one day crossing that ocean.
