Formations of seaplanes trace their way across a map of the Atlantic in this 1931 poster celebrating the Crociera Aerea Transatlantica, Italo Balbo's mass formation flight from Italy to Brazil. Between 17 December 1930 and 15 January 1931, Balbo led a squadron of Savoia-Marchetti S.55 flying boats from the seaplane base at Orbetello to Rio de Janeiro, a crossing of the South Atlantic that no group of aircraft had attempted before. The flight made Balbo a celebrity and was heavily promoted by the Italian government, including in newsreels filmed by the Istituto Luce. The artist of this design is not recorded.
