Steep limestone cliffs tower over a winding river in this Belle Époque poster for England's Midland Railway, painted by the French artist Clément Quinton and lithographed by his own Paris studio around 1910. Its French title, "Le Pic du Derbyshire," shows who it was aimed at: Continental travelers being invited to tour the Peak District. The scene is High Tor at Matlock, and the full lettering praises the Midland as the most picturesque route across England. The Midland's main line from London to Manchester threaded through the Derwent valley and the Peak, giving passengers some of the most dramatic scenery on any English railway.
