The Great Silver Fleet is spelled out around the red ring of this Eastern Air Lines label, encircling the airline's red falcon on a silver and blue field. Silver Fleet was the name given to the polished Douglas DC-2s and DC-3s that Eddie Rickenbacker added after he became general manager in 1934, modernizing Eastern's passenger service by the eve of the Second World War. Rickenbacker, the famous World War I fighter ace, bought the airline outright in 1938.
