The artist and exact date are not recorded in the sources we checked. The idea of Europe as the next great trip was a staple of transatlantic travel advertising, aimed at American travelers who had already explored their own country. Steamship lines, railways and later airlines all used the same promise: a single journey could take in capitals, cathedrals and mountain scenery across a whole continent, with the world quite literally at the traveler's feet.
