The Lisbon world's fair ran from 22 May to 30 September 1998 under the theme The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future, and grew out of plans to mark the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama's arrival in India in 1498. Its mascot, Gil, was named after the navigator Gil Eanes.
