This mid-1950s TWA poster is the work of Austin Briggs (1908–1973), one of America's leading magazine illustrators and the artist who drew the Flash Gordon comic strip in the 1940s. Briggs gives Arizona a face: a smiling cowgirl under a wide green-and-black hat, half her face in deep shadow, set against a cream ground with a quick line sketch of saguaro cactus and desert mountains. Above her, "ARIZONA" is hand-lettered in red, white and blue strokes, and below, the bold red "Fly TWA" anchors the design. TWA had flown through Arizona since its first transcontinental routes, and the Southwest was one of its signature destinations.
