Set against a sunny yellow ground, a Jamaican woman balances a basket as she looks out over a tropical bay in this early advertisement for the island. Dealers date the poster to around 1910 and note its pitch to winter travelers: Jamaica was "beautiful, healthy, accessible," with tickets available from all the steamship lines. The artist is not recorded. In those years the island was reached only by sea, and banana steamers and passenger liners from New York and Britain were opening Jamaica to a new wave of visitors escaping the northern cold, laying the groundwork for the Caribbean tourism that followed.
