Under a glowing orange sky, snow-capped peaks rise above a still mountain lake in this poster for Kashmir issued by the Indian State Railways. The artist and exact date are not recorded in the sources we checked. Between the wars the Indian State Railways ran an active publicity bureau that promoted the subcontinent to overseas travelers, producing posters and illustrated booklets on destinations such as Kashmir, complete with travel hints and rail timetables. Some of those Kashmir booklets were handed out through Thomas Cook offices as far away as Melbourne, inviting visitors to take the train north and continue by road into the cool of the Himalayan valley.
