In this 1935 KLM poster, a modern Douglas DC-2 airliner shares a green sky with the ghostly sailing ship of the Flying Dutchman legend, the phantom vessel said to roam the seas forever. KLM embraced the name as its own nickname, and the pairing of old myth and new machine made the point neatly. The DC-2 was a source of national pride at the time: KLM was the first European airline to fly the type, and its DC-2 “Uiver” finished at the top of the field in the 1934 MacRobertson air race from England to Australia.
