A red ring reading "Fly" and "Icelandic Airlines" surrounds a blue disc with a stylised bird and the Loftleidir name, all on a cream square. Loftleiðir was founded on 10 March 1944 by three young Icelandic pilots. Staying outside IATA and stopping at Reykjavík let it undercut other transatlantic fares, and from the late 1960s so many young Americans flew it to Europe that it earned the nickname "Hippie Airline." It merged with Flugfélag Íslands in the 1970s, forming what became Icelandair.
