A red eight-pointed star bursts from a yellow disc, and at its centre the Lufthansa crane flies in yellow on blue, ringed by the words Deutsche Lufthansa. The crane was drawn by Otto Firle in 1918 and the blue-and-yellow pairing has stayed with the airline ever since. Today's Lufthansa was founded in Cologne in 1953 as Luftag, bought the Lufthansa name and crane in 1954 and began international flights to London, Paris and Madrid in May 1955. Passengers were given labels like this for their luggage.
