Under the Lufthansa crane, pink lettering on a cream roundel declares "I ski with The Red Baron." The line comes from Lufthansa's American advertising: in 1971 New York agency McCann Erickson introduced the Red Baron to raise the airline's profile in the United States, where a 1969 survey found only 8% of people knew the brand. Planned for two years, the campaign ran far longer, and this version aimed squarely at American skiers heading for the Alps.
