A stately pharaoh figure rises from a cream background in this French poster advertising "La Route d'Égypte," the route to Egypt by way of Marseille and Alexandria. It pairs the Messageries Maritimes, the French steamship company, with the PLM railway, which carried passengers from Paris down the Rhône valley to the docks at Marseille. The artist and exact date are not recorded in the sources we checked. From the port, liners crossed the Mediterranean to Alexandria in a few days, delivering travelers to the gateway of the Nile, the pyramids and the temples of Upper Egypt in the great age of Egyptian tourism.
