A soaring bird sweeps across this red-orange roundel from Martz Airlines of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, ringed by the motto "Speed - Courtesy - Safety." Martz was a Wilkes-Barre transportation company founded by Frank Martz Sr., best known for its buses. From 1926 the company also offered airline service linking New York City, Elmira and Buffalo, until the Great Depression ended the venture in 1933. A rare relic of early American air travel, when a bus line could take to the skies.
