Issued in 1938 by Mexico's Dirección General de Turismo, the government tourism office, this bold red poster gathers two great landmarks of Mexico City: the golden Angel of Independence atop its column and the towers of the Metropolitan Cathedral. The artist is not recorded in the sources we checked. The Angel was completed in 1910 for the centennial of Mexico's independence and quickly became the capital's emblem. By the late 1930s new highways and air services were bringing more American visitors south of the border, and the national tourism office used posters like this one to present Mexico City as a modern, monumental destination.
