Middle East Airlines, the Beirut-based carrier known as MEA, produced a series of posters for the destinations on its network, and this one sells Germany. Set against a deep dark green background, a red castle rises from the composition, surrounded by flowers in bright contrasting color. The castle is a shorthand for the storybook Germany of hilltop fortresses and river valleys that travelers dreamed of visiting, and the bold flat colors give the design a strong, modern graphic punch. It is a striking reminder that MEA linked Lebanon with the cities of Europe as well as the Arab world.
