A broad green cedar, the symbol of Lebanon, fills the center of this round Middle East Airlines label, framed by a red ring carrying the airline's name and decorative script. MEA was founded in Beirut on May 31, 1945, by Saeb Salam and Fawzi El-Hoss, and began flying on January 1, 1946. Pan American took a stake in 1949, and BOAC became its major partner from 1955 until 1961. Airlines handed stickers like this to passengers to decorate their suitcases, carrying the cedar far beyond Beirut.
