The massive round towers of Castel Nuovo stand against a clear blue sky in this travel poster for Naples. The artist and exact date are not recorded in the sources we checked. Known locally as the Maschio Angioino, the castle was begun in the late 13th century under Charles I of Anjou, who moved the royal seat to Naples, and it was rebuilt in the 15th century under the Aragonese kings, whose white marble triumphal arch still marks the entrance. Standing beside the harbor, it was among the first sights for travelers arriving by sea, which made it a natural emblem for the city on Italian tourism posters.
