A bright red jet tail fills this roundel, lettered Northwest Orient Airlines around the rim. Northwest painted its tails red from World War II on as a visual aid in harsh weather, and in 1962 it adopted a jet tail in a circle as its main logo, the motif seen here. The Orient branding, used from 1947, reflected the airline's transpacific network anchored in Tokyo. Stickers like this were handed to passengers for their luggage and made the red tail familiar far beyond the airport.
