A carved totem pole stands in the foreground of this Pan American World Airways poster from around 1950, with snow-capped mountains behind and an airliner crossing the sky above. Totem poles, carved by the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest coast, were a natural emblem for Alaska, which was still a United States territory and would not become a state until 1959. The artist is not recorded. "Fly to Alaska by Clipper" used the airline's favorite phrase, borrowed from the name Pan Am gave its airliners after the fast sailing ships of the nineteenth century.
