Brussels gets the full postcard treatment in this Pan American World Airways poster, "Brussels by Clipper." The ornate guildhalls of the Grand-Place, the historic central square of the Belgian capital, frame a busy flower market spread out below, a scene that catches the city at its most colorful. The artist is not recorded. The "by Clipper" wording comes from Pan Am's practice of naming its airliners Clippers, after the swift sailing ships of the nineteenth century, and the phrase became a signature of the airline's posters for Europe and beyond, inviting Americans across the Atlantic to gables, gilt and blooms.
