This 1930s Pan American Airways poster sells the Caribbean in a single sweep: a flying boat crosses open sea while scarlet macaws and palm fronds fill the foreground with tropical color. "Fly to the Caribbean by Clipper" was the message of the decade, when Pan American built its early network around flying boats that could alight in harbors and lagoons across the islands and Latin America, where proper airfields were scarce. The artist is not recorded. The bold birds and deep blues give it the feel of a travel brochure come to life, made for a public just discovering that the tropics were hours, not days, away.
