A brightly painted church facade towers over a religious procession in this Pan American poster from around 1940, "Fly to Guatemala by Clipper." Colonial-era churches and the processions that fill the streets on feast days are among the most memorable sights of Guatemala, and the poster turns them into a blaze of color. The artist is not recorded. Around 1940 Pan American was the dominant airline in Central America, and its "by Clipper" slogan, taken from the name it gave its airliners after the fast sailing ships of the nineteenth century, ran across its posters for the region.
