A flying boat passes over an island scene in this horizontal 1938 Pan American Airways poster, "Hawaii by Flying Clipper." It dates from the heroic early years of Pacific air travel: Pan American had opened its transpacific mail route in 1935 and began carrying passengers from California to Honolulu in 1936, a crossing that took many hours on the big flying boats it called Clippers, named for the fast sailing ships of the nineteenth century. The artist is not recorded. The wide format gives room for the aircraft and the islands together, the journey and the destination in one view.
