A hula dancer in a grass skirt, framed by a bold black border, is the star of this Pan Am poster, "Hawaii by Clipper." Hula, the traditional dance of the Hawaiian Islands, was the most familiar image of Hawaii in mid-century travel art, and here it stands alone as the whole invitation. The date and artist are not recorded. Pan Am opened passenger service from California to Honolulu in 1936 with its flying boats, and Hawaii remained one of its most important leisure routes. The "by Clipper" line comes from the name the airline gave its airliners, after the fast sailing ships of the nineteenth century.
