A Viking longship under a boldly striped sail carries the spirit of the Norsemen in this Pan American poster for Scandinavia. A 1954 Pan Am "Scandinavia by Clipper" poster by the French designer Jean Carlu (1900-1997) is also built around a Viking ship, with oars, shields and a second sail on the horizon, and this design appears to belong to that campaign, though the attribution is not confirmed here. After the Second World War, Pan Am's Clippers linked New York with the Scandinavian capitals, competing with SAS across the North Atlantic.
