The statue of Christ the Redeemer stands with arms outstretched over Rio de Janeiro in this vintage-style poster art for Pan Am, titled "South America by Clipper." Completed in 1931 atop Corcovado mountain, the statue quickly became the defining image of Rio and, in travel art, of the whole continent. This is a modern restored rendering, and the date and artist of any original are not recorded here. Pan Am named its airliners Clippers after the swift sailing ships of the nineteenth century, and "by Clipper" became the sign-off on posters that carried Americans south to Brazil and beyond.
