Lush green mountains rise from a tropical island while a flying boat passes overhead in this 1938 Pan American Airways poster, "Fly to South Sea Isles via Pan American." The late 1930s were the great age of the Pacific flying boat, when Pan American pushed its Clipper service out across the ocean from California by way of island bases, opening the Pacific to air travel for the first time. The artist is not recorded. With its deep greens and blues and the airliner small against the landscape, the poster sells the romance of distance as much as the destination itself.
