A leaning palm, a green headland, white sails on blue water and beach umbrellas under a pink sky make up this oval HAWAII label, ringed in navy with Pan American World Airways and The System of the Flying Clippers. Hawaii was Pan Am's first stepping stone across the Pacific: a survey flight reached Honolulu in April 1935, and the first transpacific airmail flight left Alameda for Manila that November. Pan Am named its aircraft Clippers from 1931 and adopted the World Airways name in the 1940s.
