Paul George Lawler painted the art for this 1938 Pan American Airways poster, Transpacific Flight - It's a Small World by Pan American. A flying boat marked USA sweeps above an Asian harbor, with the sails of traditional junks in the foreground. Pan American opened its Pacific Clipper service in the 1930s, carrying passengers, mail and cargo by flying boat, and the It's a Small World slogan captured how dramatically those flights shrank the distance between America and Asia. It is one of the defining images of the flying boat era.
