Panagra, Pan American-Grace Airways, was formed in 1928 as a partnership between Pan American Airways and the W. R. Grace Company. Grace's steamship lines gave it a foothold along the west coast of South America, and the joint airline used that reach to fly from the Canal Zone down to Peru and Chile, crossing the Andes to Argentina, at a time when the same trip by sea took weeks.
