Jules Massenet's opera "Ariane," with a libretto by Catulle Mendès, premiered at the Palais Garnier in Paris on October 31, 1906, with Lucienne Bréval in the title role. Albert Maignan's poster for the premiere at the Théâtre National de l'Opéra shows the heroine in flowing robes on a pale cream ground, with a ship on the sea behind her. It recalls the story's turning point, when Theseus sails off with her sister Phèdre and leaves Ariane on the shore of Naxos. Graceful and theatrical, it is a fine example of Belle Époque opera posters.
