A map of the Philippine islands, scattered with stars, sits on a deep maroon ground in this 1953 poster for Philippine Air Lines, which calls the country the "Crossroads of the Orient" and the airline the "Route of the Orient Star." The artist is not recorded. PAL used the Orient Star slogan on its posters of the early 1950s, including a pictorial world map with Manila marked by a golden star at the center of routes to North America, Asia, Europe and Hawaii. Founded in 1941, Philippine Air Lines is the oldest commercial airline still operating in Asia.
